PewDiePie has
revealed his net worth is ‘definitely’ more than $20 million (£15
million) as T-Series leads the subscriber battle by more than 100,000.
The YouTuber – real name Felix Kjellberg – opened up in a candid chat
with his subscribers, as he Googled his name and debunked claims about
his net worth.
Looking at estimates that he earns $3400 (£2600) per hour, he
considered: ‘I don’t know exactly how much I make per day. That doesn’t
seem too far off, which is pretty crazy when you think about it.’
Searching for other estimates, the Swedish gamer began to discuss his
net worth: ‘This one says $20 million. I would say it’s definitely more
than that.’
On an estimate of
$68 million (£52 million) from 2016, he pointed out: ‘It’s very old
data, isn’t it?’ before completely debunking a theory that he earns $42
million (£32 million) on merchandise alone.
‘What? No way! I wish!’ he marveled.
The 29-year-old explained: ‘Money is such an interesting topic for me
because I obviously didn’t start YouTube to make money.
‘The sad thing I’ve learned is how much people value money in a way, or
at least the idea of money.’
People look at money
as something undoubtedly good – it couldn’t possibly be something
negative to have money, which is understandably a strange concept for
people to accept,’ he added.
‘But you look at people who win the lottery and then having money
fundamentally changes their whole life, not just how they view life but
also how other people view them, and I think that’s a change in
particular that I feel like I really want to protect.’
Using air quotes, Felix added: ‘I try to live “modestly”. Obviously I
don’t considering how much I make, I try to live modestly, because I
wanna just live a normal life, I don’t want money to change my life.
‘It’s great to have but it can also become a problem,’ he revealed,
before laughing and imagining the clickbait title he could have
capitalised on: ‘Millionaire rants about why money is bad.’
Explaining that money doesn’t solve all problems, he joked: ‘Everyone is
a blood-sucking vampire, and they want your money.
‘And as soon as they know you have money, they are coming for it!’
